Cigré, the world forum for power systems

July 2017

Words from the President

Robert STEPHEN - CIGRE President

The CIGRE steering committee met in conjunction with the Dublin Symposium at the end of May. This provided an excellent opportunity for the local National Committee and Symposium organizing Committee to meet with Steering Committee members. The theme of the symposium was experiencing the future power system … today. This was particularly relevant to Ireland as they have achieved large penetration of renewable generation successfully. Members of the Technical Committee present were also able to assimilate the information from papers providing for good summaries of the papers on the last day of the Symposium.

With regard to the Steering Committee meeting good progress has been made in relation to the access of documents on search engines such as Google Scholar. It is hoped this will be in place in the first quarter of 2018.  The Marketing strategy is taking shape and it is hoped that eventually CIGRE can standardize on logos, presentations and documents across all NCs. Thereby preventing confusion and the need for National Committees to develop their own material for promoting CIGRE. The marketing strategy is linked to the CIGRE strategy from which the vision and mission were shared previously. It is also intended that National Committees will have access to web content that will enable them to publish presentations, documents and event notices easily and at low cost. This will assist members' access to CIGRE information.  The CIGRE Science & Engineering journal (CSE) will soon be accredited enabling academic institutions to claim credits when publishing in the magazine. Another benefit is that CSE does not charge a publishing fee for papers. Members are urged to consider publishing in this international peer reviewed journal.

Collaboration with other bodies such as CIRED is continuing with CIGRE aiming at obtaining topics from these organizations for possible working groups. These may be joint groups.

A task force of the Steering committee looking at Distribution has made recommendations to increase the involvement of distribution experts in Study Committees. This proposal will be presented to the Administrative Council in September.

In conclusion the Steering Committee and Administrative Council are working hard on the priorities of providing access to excellent technical references for members. As well as to inform members of latest technical developments via symposia and conferences.
